A Thoughtful Approach to Care
Combining ancient wisdom and modern science through thoughtful, compassionate care.
Tempo was created to provide calm, structured, and individualized support for those seeking an integrative approach to chronic pain, nervous system regulation, recovery, and long-term well-being.
Care guided by respect for the nervous system, the interconnected nature of the body, and the individuality of the person.
Integrating acupuncture and photobiomodulation (PBMT) within a thoughtful, individualized model of care designed to support recovery, regulation, resilient function, and the body's natural capacity to adapt and heal.
Grounded in Clinical Experience
Tempo was created to offer calm, structured, and individualized care for those seeking a more thoughtful approach to health, recovery, and long-term wellbeing. Care is designed around careful listening, clinical reasoning, and respect for the complexity of each individual.
At Tempo, treatment is approached as a process rather than a quick intervention. Acupuncture, photobiomodulation (PBMT), and individualized treatment planning are integrated within a structured model that emphasizes pacing, consistency, reassessment, and thoughtful adaptation over time.
Judson Chaney, N.D., L.Ac. brings more than two decades of clinical experience in integrative medicine, including work within hospital-based integrative medicine and oncology settings. Tempo was shaped through years of observing the importance of creating therapeutic environments that support both clinical outcomes and the human experience of care.
The goal of treatment is not simply symptom suppression, but meaningful improvement in function, regulation, resilience, and quality of life. Care at Tempo is designed to support sustainable progress while respecting the nervous system, the interconnected nature of the body, and the individuality of the person.

The Tempo Approach
Pacing
Care at Tempo is designed around the understanding that many chronic conditions require thoughtful pacing, consistency, and time. Treatment recommendations are guided not only by symptoms, but by how the nervous system and individual respond throughout the process of care.
Reassessment
Rather than following rigid protocols alone, care is continually reassessed and adapted over time. Tempo’s approach emphasizes careful observation, communication, and gradual progression to support sustainable and meaningful improvement.
Therapeutic Rhythm
The name Tempo reflects the importance of rhythm, timing, and therapeutic pacing in the healing process. The goal is to create a structured yet flexible environment where patient and practitioner can move through care together with clarity, consistency, and mutual understanding.
What to Expect
Care at Tempo begins with careful listening, thoughtful assessment, and a structured approach designed around the individual.
Initial Consultation
Care begins with a comprehensive consultation focused on understanding clinical history, symptoms, functional limitations, goals, and prior treatment experiences , while creating space to understand the individual more fully.
Individualized Treatment Planning
Treatment recommendations are guided by ongoing reassessment, response to care, pacing, and the evolving needs of the individual rather than rigid protocols alone.
Consistency and Reassessment
Many chronic conditions benefit from consistency, careful observation, and gradual progression over time. Tempo’s program-based model is designed to support structured care while allowing flexibility, responsiveness, and thoughtful clinical adjustment over time.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the primary tools used at Tempo to support recovery, regulation, resilient function, and the body's natural capacity to adapt and heal. Care is individualized and integrated within a broader model that emphasizes careful listening, pacing, reassessment, and meaningful functional improvement over time.
At Tempo, acupuncture is used to help influence the nervous system, support circulation, reduce pain sensitivity, and encourage the body’s natural capacity to regulate and recover. Treatment is guided by both clinical experience and the individual response of each patient.
Acupuncture may be helpful for people navigating chronic pain, headaches, musculoskeletal tension, injury recovery, stress-related symptoms, nerve dysfunction, and the desire to maintain function and mobility over time.
Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all protocols, acupuncture at Tempo is part of a structured and responsive care process. It may be used alongside photobiomodulation (PBMT), education, and reassessment to support recovery, resilience, and long-term participation in life.
Light Therapy
Photobiomodulation (PBMT), often called light therapy, is one of the primary tools used at Tempo to support recovery, adaptation, and healthy function. Using specific wavelengths of light, PBMT is designed to help support the body's natural healing processes at the cellular level.
At Tempo, PBMT is not used as a stand-alone technology, but as part of a broader care model that emphasizes careful listening, pacing, reassessment, and individualized treatment planning. Light therapy is integrated thoughtfully alongside acupuncture and other supportive strategies based on each person's needs and goals.
Research suggests PBMT may help support recovery from musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain conditions, nerve-related symptoms, headaches, inflammation, and physical stress. Many people also seek care to support performance, healthy aging, recovery from activity, and maintaining function over time.
The goal is not simply symptom management, but helping people recover, adapt, and continue participating fully in life. Treatment recommendations are guided by both clinical experience and ongoing reassessment throughout the process of care.
Advanced Light Therapy Technology
Tempo utilizes a professional photobiomodulation system employed in university medical centers, professional sports organizations, military rehabilitation environments, and specialized recovery settings.
The technology itself is only one part of the process. Meaningful outcomes depend upon thoughtful integration with assessment, treatment planning, patient education, and ongoing reassessment over time.
Meet Judson
Judson Chaney, N.D., L.Ac.
Founder, Tempo Acupuncture and Light Therapy
My interest in healing began as a patient long before it became my profession.
For more than twenty years, I have worked with individuals facing chronic pain, neurological conditions, injury recovery, cancer treatment side effects, and many other complex health challenges.
My career has included private practice, hospital-based integrative medicine, and more than a decade working within a large healthcare system. Those experiences ultimately led me to create Tempo, a practice built around thoughtful care, meaningful relationships, and the belief that healing takes time.
At Tempo, I combine acupuncture, photobiomodulation (light therapy), careful reassessment, and individualized treatment plans designed around each person's goals and circumstances.
Some arrive because they are suffering. Some arrive because they want to keep doing what they love. Some arrive seeking support, guidance, or a different path forward. Each person arrives with a different story. All are welcome at Tempo.

Programs and Care Plans
-
Many of the conditions commonly treated at Tempo, including chronic pain, neuropathy, headaches, and recovery from injury or illness, develop over time and rarely change after a single visit.
Programs provide a structured framework for care, allowing treatment, reassessment, and progress tracking to occur in a thoughtful and organized way. They help create consistency, establish realistic expectations, and provide opportunities to evaluate what is working and what may need to be adjusted along the way.
The goal is not simply to provide a series of treatments, but to support meaningful improvement in function, comfort, and quality of life over time.
For individuals who prefer a more gradual introduction to care, Tempo also offers individual visits and the Tempo Introduction Series.
-
Yes.
While many patients choose a structured program of care, participation is not required. Tempo offers both program-based care and individual visits, allowing you to choose the approach that best fits your goals, preferences, and circumstances.
Some individuals prefer the structure and reassessment process that programs provide, while others wish to begin with individual visits before deciding on a longer-term plan.
The goal is to find an approach that feels appropriate for you while supporting thoughtful, individualized care.
-
The Tempo Introduction Series is a two-visit option designed for individuals who would like to experience care before deciding whether a longer-term program is appropriate for their situation.
These visits provide an opportunity to discuss your goals, receive treatment, and begin exploring how acupuncture, photobiomodulation therapy (light therapy), and other aspects of care may fit into your overall health plan.
For some individuals, these visits provide enough information to move forward confidently with a structured program. For others, they offer a valuable opportunity to learn more about the process before making any longer-term commitment.
The goal is to provide a thoughtful introduction to care while allowing you to make informed decisions at your own pace.
-
The number of treatments needed varies from person to person and depends on many factors, including the nature of the condition, how long it has been present, overall health, and individual response to care.
Some people notice meaningful changes relatively quickly, while others require a longer period of consistent treatment before significant improvement occurs.
At Tempo, care recommendations are based on your individual situation and are reassessed regularly. Rather than assuming a fixed number of visits, we monitor progress over time and adjust recommendations based on how you are responding to treatment.
The goal is to provide enough care to determine whether meaningful improvement is occurring while helping you make informed decisions about your health moving forward.
-
Progress is evaluated through regular reassessment and ongoing discussion about your symptoms, function, and overall quality of life.
Depending on your situation, we may monitor factors such as pain levels, physical function, activity tolerance, sensation, sleep, energy, or other goals that are meaningful to you.
The purpose of reassessment is not simply to count visits, but to determine whether care is producing meaningful change. Recommendations may be adjusted over time based on your response, progress, and evolving goals.
At Tempo, treatment decisions are guided by both clinical experience and the outcomes that matter most to you.
Acupuncture
-
Most people find acupuncture to be far more comfortable than they expected.
Acupuncture needles are very thin, much thinner than the needles commonly used for injections or blood draws. While individual experiences vary, many people feel little to no discomfort during treatment.
Sensations may include a brief pinch, warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a feeling of movement around the needle. These sensations are generally temporary and often fade quickly.
Many patients find treatments relaxing and some even fall asleep during their sessions.
-
When performed by a qualified and licensed practitioner, acupuncture is generally considered very safe.
At Tempo, single-use sterile needles are used and treatment recommendations are tailored to each individual's health history, goals, and circumstances.
As with many healthcare procedures, minor side effects such as temporary soreness, bruising, or fatigue can occasionally occur. Serious complications are rare.
Your health history and any questions or concerns will be reviewed prior to treatment to help ensure care is appropriate for your situation.
-
Tempo focuses on individuals seeking support for chronic pain, neuropathy, headaches, recovery from injury or illness, and concerns related to healthy aging and physical function.
Common reasons people seek care include musculoskeletal pain, nerve-related symptoms, chronic headaches, sports and activity-related injuries, post-surgical recovery, and support during or after medical treatment.
Some people arrive because they are suffering. Others arrive because they want to continue doing the activities they enjoy. Each person arrives with different goals, and treatment recommendations are tailored to the individual rather than a diagnosis alone.
-
The number of needles used varies depending on your condition, treatment goals, and individual needs. Some treatments may involve only a few needles, while others may use more.
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, much thinner than the needles commonly used for injections or blood draws. The tips are manufactured to a very high degree of precision, allowing them to be inserted gently and comfortably.
At Tempo, treatment is tailored to the individual. Care typically begins conservatively and is adjusted based on your comfort, response, and goals.
Most patients are surprised by how small the needles are and how comfortable treatment can be.
-
Experiences vary from person to person, but many individuals describe acupuncture as relaxing and surprisingly comfortable.
After a needle is placed, you may feel sensations such as warmth, heaviness, tingling, mild pressure, or a feeling of movement in the area being treated. These sensations are generally temporary and often fade as treatment continues.
Some people feel deeply relaxed during treatment, while others notice a sense of calm, improved body awareness, or reduced tension. It is also common for patients to become so comfortable that they rest or fall asleep during their session.
Every treatment experience is unique, and care is adjusted based on your comfort and response.
Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation Therapy)
-
What is photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT)?
Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), sometimes called light therapy or low-level laser therapy, uses specific wavelengths of light to support the body's natural healing and recovery processes.
PBMT has been studied for its potential role in supporting recovery, managing pain, reducing inflammation, and helping improve physical function in a variety of clinical settings.
At Tempo, PBMT may be used as a stand-alone therapy or integrated with acupuncture and other aspects of care as part of an individualized treatment plan. Recommendations are based on your goals, condition, and response to treatment.
-
Many people are surprised by how little they feel during PBMT treatment.
Depending on the device, treatment area, and settings being used, you may notice little sensation at all, or you may experience mild warmth, relaxation, or a subtle awareness in the area being treated.
Because the therapeutic wavelengths used in PBMT are often invisible to the unaided eye and do not rely on heat, the experience can feel quite different from many other therapies.
Treatments are typically brief, comfortable, and well tolerated. If you have questions during treatment, they will always be discussed with you as part of the process.
-
Is PBMT safe?
When used appropriately, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is generally considered safe and well tolerated.
Treatment recommendations are tailored to your individual health history, goals, and circumstances. Safety considerations, precautions, and any questions you may have will be reviewed prior to treatment.
Most individuals experience little to no discomfort during PBMT sessions. As with any healthcare intervention, responses can vary from person to person, and recommendations are adjusted based on your individual needs and response to care.
If PBMT is not appropriate for your situation, alternative recommendations will be discussed with you.

Home red-light devices may be a helpful option for some individuals, but professional PBMT involves more than simply shining light on an area of the body.
At Tempo, treatment recommendations are based on your condition, goals, health history, and response to care. Factors such as treatment location, wavelength selection, dosage, frequency, and overall treatment strategy are considered as part of an individualized plan.
Professional PBMT systems may also offer capabilities and treatment options that differ from many consumer devices.
For some individuals, home devices may complement a treatment plan. For others, professional treatment may be more appropriate. Recommendations are based on your individual needs and circumstances.
Insurance and Payment
-
Tempo does not directly participate with insurance plans.
Payment is collected at the time of service. For patients with out-of-network acupuncture benefits, a superbill may be provided that can be submitted to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Insurance coverage and reimbursement vary by plan. We encourage patients to contact their insurance provider directly to determine what benefits may be available.
If you have questions about payment or reimbursement, please feel free to ask.
-
Yes.
Upon request, Tempo can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Because insurance plans vary widely, reimbursement cannot be guaranteed. We encourage patients to contact their insurance provider directly to understand their specific benefits, coverage requirements, and reimbursement policies.
If you have questions about superbills or the reimbursement process, please feel free to ask.
-
In many cases, yes.
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) may be used for eligible healthcare expenses, including acupuncture services. Because individual plans can vary, we recommend checking with your plan administrator regarding specific eligibility requirements.
Receipts can be provided for your records upon request.
-
Tempo was designed to prioritize individualized care, thoughtful treatment planning, and the flexibility to recommend services based on your needs rather than insurance requirements.
Insurance plans often have specific coverage rules, visit limits, documentation requirements, and reimbursement policies that may not align with every patient's situation or treatment goals.
By operating outside of insurance networks, Tempo is able to focus on the patient-practitioner relationship, provide recommendations based on clinical judgment, and spend more time on care rather than administrative requirements.
For patients with out-of-network benefits, a superbill may be provided for possible reimbursement through their insurance plan.
-
Tempo accepts major credit cards, debit cards, cash, and other approved electronic payment methods.
Payment is due at the time services are provided unless other arrangements have been made in advance.
If you have questions regarding payment options, please feel free to ask.
